After a 17 hour journey, we arrived in Los Angeles. Upon arrival we have experienced our first connection with the pet-industry. The dogs at customs here are beagles, whom are well know for their great skills; the boy next to us in line had to hand in his apple as it is not allowed to bring any type of fruit or vegetable into the USA.
Something we start to see in Europe more and more, is daily business here in USA; especially in LA, transportation of your pet in a handbag, shoulder-bag or even backpack. At the car-rental service, a customer next to us came in with a duffle-bag, out of which a small face of a “mixed bread” came every now and then. He treated this dog like it was his own baby; something we would see a lot the coming days.
The cliches being partly true, all is “bigger” here; from the cars to the buildings, the meal-size as well as the coffees. But one thing we found especially here in Los Angeles is “smaller” are the size of the dogs. All shops around the center of LA are focussed on small dogs.
Below some of the shops we have visited both Boutique Style as well as Chain Stores:
All retailer offering natural/organic/wholesome foods, eco-friendly toys, treats and training tools. Focusses on family-run brands and a personal approach; your dog is not a pet here, it is family. Next to pet-supplies Healthy Spot offers grooming, training and daycare. This company has multiple locations of which we visited the following: Central: location focussed on small dogs. Open day-care with big-glass windows. There is a message board with Polaroid images of the dogs visiting the daycare. 8525 California Route 2, West Hollywood, CA 90069 Long Beach: focussed on medium sized dogs. 6433 E. Pacific Coast Highway Unit A-5, Long Beach
Ultimate pet distination where convenience meets community in a design-forward, social experiene fot pets and people. This store has multiple locations featuring a Paw-bar, bakery and luxury items like Dog-Wine & Dog-Beer. The Champagne-Room on 2nd floor holds the most luxurious items available on the pet-market at the moment. Not looking for dog supplies? There is also a cat-vitrine in which you can view the cat in its "natural habitat". 9388 S Santa Monica Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA 90210
The thing you notice immediately here is the serene entrance with pond and Buddha statue and the Ghandi Quote on the back wall. Next to a wide range of natural foods, toys & dog-beds; Urban Pet also offers services like vaccinations, teeth cleaning, training in group classes & furtography. We very much liked their cross-branding with different initiatives at business-card table. 7515 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036
Both offline as well online retailer for pet products focussing on the smaller dogs. Off course we are in LA; therefore your dog should be able to wear a swim-short, glitter-covered dress or Hollywood-branded sweat. Next to the store, there is the daycare on which the LA-dogs can "sunbade" on their own sunchair covered with small pink umbrellas. 346 N La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90048

Shops we would like to visit in the future:
Blue Collar Walking Dog: This store focusses mainly on the active dogs
The Modern Dog: A store which mixes lifestyle and pet-care on Abbot Kinney Road; a very nice shopping street in the connecting village Venice.
Brands which we found remarkable:
Found my Animal: A collar and leash brand which uses cotton braids mixed with tanned leather. The brand has its origin in rescued dogs and focusses on the uniqueness of your animal.
Tiki Pet: Grain free pet food in a cartoon-like packaging
